How To De-Stress At Your Desk

No matter how rewarding your work is or how friendly your colleagues can be, life behind a desk can be stressful. Whether you’re in the office or working from home, it’s important to look after yourself. Here are a few ideas on how to relieve stress while you work.

Adjust Your Environment

Make sure your desk and work area are as comfortable as possible. This can include adjusting your computer monitors and screens so they are just below eye level and making sure your phone, printer and any other equipment is all within easy reach.

Find The Right Position

Make sure you position your computer keyboard so that your elbows are at the side of your torso and your forearms are horizontal to the keyboard. If you need to, also adjust your office chair so it’s the right height for you. Try adjusting the chair’s back angle so that your posture is as upright as possible, but you are still comfortable.

Reduce Screen Time

If possible, try to limit the amount of time you’re staring at your screen. Ways to achieve this can include taking technology breaks, choosing to call someone instead of email, and moving your body as much as possible. If you participate in virtual meetings, try limiting the meeting time and sticking to the meeting’s schedule so no one feels overwhelmed.

Get Up

When you’re working at a desk, it’s important to take breaks and move your body. This can help keep you relaxed and focused. This could include taking a quick walk down the hall, across the street or simply doing a few stretches at your desk, such as stretching your back, moving your ankles in circles, shaking out your hands or doing a few squats to stretch your muscles.

Don’t Forget Lunch

Even though it might be tempting on a busy day, try not to skip eating a healthy lunch. Eating well can help reduce anxiety and tension and improves your concentration. Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day and limit your caffeine intake.

Take It Easy

If you’re feeling frustrated or stressed while at your desk, try to stay calm. Take a few deep, relaxing breaths to slow down your heartrate. If you need to, step away from your desk for a moment to collect yourself and have a healthy snack to stay energized.
