Best Winter Activities in Nanaimo

Here in Nanaimo we might not get snow every year, but we do have an abundance of wintertime activities and events to keep you happy during the holiday season. Below are some ideas on local activities you can try in the Nanaimo area.

Shop Local at Holiday Craft Markets

There are many craft markets in Nanaimo, offering local goods and gifts with a holiday twist. Some local favourites include the Winter Weekend Holiday Market at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, The Holiday Market at Nanaimo North Town Centre mall, Nanaimo Bakery Holiday Markets, and the Winterfest Artisan Market downtown at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

See a Holiday Show

Whether you’re seeing a holiday movie at the local movie theatre or attending a live show at the Port Theatre, there’s always a show happening nearby. One favourite local show isthe Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular at the Port Theatre, although the nearby Chemainus Theatre also always has a selection of holiday shows.

Pick Your Own Christmas Tree

There are many local farms and markets to purchase local holiday gifts at, but picking your own Christmas tree from Gogo’s Christmas Tree Farm is a particular holiday favourite. Offering both pre-cut trees or the chance to cut down the tree yourself, Gogo’s Christmas Tree Farm is a local favourite and holiday tradition in the making.

Lace Up Your Ice Skates

Another classic winter activity is ice skating, and the Frank Crane Arena offers both scheduled public skating times and the option to rent the ice privately for family, friends or co-workers. The Winter Wonderland event at Frank Crane Arena is a popular free family skate event and a definite festive favourite. Other public ice arenas include the Nanaimo Ice Centre and the Cliff McNabb Arena.

Volunteer For a Local Charity

It’s the giving season and there’s no better way to celebrate that than by giving back to the local community. However you help out, donating to local charities can always make a big impact. Some local Nanaimo charities include the Salvation Army, Great Nanaimo Toy Drive and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island.
