Canada Named the #1 Travel Destination

Canada Named the #1 Travel Destination

Here Are Some Reasons Why

Wondering where to travel to next? Curious where Canada ranks as a travel destination? Lonely Planet is one of the largest travel guidebooks in the world. This famous travel resource uses hundreds of writers and experts to create their rankings and highlight all the best travel spots around the world. And this year, Lonely Planet named Canada as the best travel destination for 2017.

Why this year in particular? It is the country’s biggest birthday, with Canada 150 celebrations happening across the country. This makes it a perfect time to travel to Canada or even travel to an area you’ve never ventured to before. And there’s always more than enough natural beauty, vibrant culture and exciting adventure to keep people making the trip. Below are just a few reasons to explore Canada, whether you live here or not.

National Parks

Canada has plenty of national parks, 47 to be exact! Protecting natural habitats and enjoying the stunning scenery are all part of a visit to one of these Canadian attractions. And in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, passes to all national parks will be free for 2017. Some of the most impressive parks include Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, Banff National Park and Yoho National Park. For more local exploring, check out provincial parks like Goldstream Provincial Park and Strathcona Provincial Park.

Historic Sites & Museums

Canada has many historic sites and museums that enrich the culture and historical significance of the country. Some of the best historic sites and museums include the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, Chateau Frontenac, L’Anse aux Meadows and the National Gallery of Canada. For more local culture check out the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Vancouver Art Gallery. There is also an abundance of community museums, with admission often being by donation. If you want to get a more engaging sense of a place try experiences like a walking tour, such as the Discover the Past Walking Tours in Victoria.

Country Retreats

Nowhere does countryside charm and vast wilderness like British Columbia. If you enjoy camping, some lovely local spots include Strathcona Provincial Park, Hornby Island and Pacific Rim National Park. If you prefer sturdier lodgings, there are many countryside retreats and cabins to discover. Some favourite local areas include the Okanagan Valley, Tofino and Parksville.
