How to Child-Proof Your Home

Taking care of kids is hard enough without worrying if their new home is a safe environment. As soon as you move in, you should be prepared and child-proof the house before they can start getting into any trouble. Below are some tips to help you make your home safer for your baby or young child.

Electrical Outlets

One of the most important features of a house to child-proof is the electrical outlets and cords. Make sure to move all electrical cords out of reach and cover all electrical outlets so your child can’t chew or investigate it further.

Heavy Furniture & Cabinets

Kids love to explore and a mysterious cabinet or cupboard can be dangerous if your child is left unattended. Be sure to close and lock all cabinets and drawers in their reach, so they don’t hurt themselves when opening them. Make sure all heavy or sharp-edged furniture and art is stored away or out of reach of your child to protect them from hurting themselves as they move around.

The Bathroom

For safety reasons, make sure your baby or young child is never left unattended in the bathtub. Other tips include keeping them out of reach of the faucet and laying down non-skid strips on the bottom of the bathtub to prevent you or your child from slipping.

Stairs

Stairs can be especially dangerous for babies and younger children. It’s important to make sure that all stairs and other elevated areas are barred off. Child gates are most effective for this, as adults can step over them.
